Biography

Kurgan & Agregat is a Kharkiv hip-hop group founded in 2014. Three members: Yevhen Volodchenko (Kurgan) and twin brothers Amil and Ramil Nasirov. All three were classmates from the town of Blyzniuky in Kharkiv region. The brothers had previously lived in the village of Stepove.

The name carries symbolic weight. Kurgan — Yevhen's alias — emphasises his connection to his home region (a kurhan is a burial mound, a feature of the Ukrainian steppe landscape). Agregat (aggregate) implies roughness and mechanicalness, but also strength and resilience. Rural colour and urban aesthetics in a single name.

First clips shot on a smartphone in Blyzniuky and uploaded to YouTube. The first track officially released under the Kurgan & Agregat name was Krovavyi Kulak (Bloody Fist). But a different song went viral.

Maksym Serdiuk, founder of the music media SLUKH, called them "diamonds of Ukrainian rap and contemporary pop culture" — for their live language, metaphorical writing and ability to stay "their own."

Love and the 2014 explosion

13 April 2014 — the video Kurgan: Love appeared on the YouTube channel Blazhenne Selo (Blessed Village). Shot on a phone, no budget, lyrics in surzhyk (Ukrainian-Russian mixed language) — went viral within days. Sharp humour, unusual delivery, recognisable images of rural and semi-urban life. The audience responded immediately.

Satirical lyrics, the Slobozhanian dialect and surzhyk as an artistic choice — not as a mark of "inadequacy" but as a deliberate language — made the group instantly recognisable and unlike anything else.

2014-2015 — first concerts. By the members' own account: "earning kopecks." But already in 2015 they performed at the Atlas festival — effectively a duo: Amil and Yevhen. Ramil was living with relatives and working construction at the time. After that festival something changed scale: Dasha Astafieva noticed them.

Astafieva, Monatik and the festival years

First performance with Dasha Astafieva — at a private birthday party where the neighbours complained about the profanity and cut the electricity. Monatik at that point wasn't yet so famous, and the group didn't even know who they were performing in front of.

9 December 2015 — the joint video Vchytelka (Teacher) with Astafieva, who plays a confident and strict schoolteacher. The clip hit hundreds of thousands of views; the collaboration became a friendship. Then Habeli, later Tykha Revoliutsiia from the Pole Kanifoli album.

2017 — mixtape Degan. The title track is about self-identification, internal temptations and decisions one regrets. Became an anthem for Ukrainian rap fans.

30 April 2018 — debut studio album S.Sh.R. / Srednia Shkola Repa (Middle School of Rap). The group is now regularly on stages at ZaxidFest, Atlas Weekend, Fayne Misto, Hedonism Festival.

Discography

Degan (mixtape, 2017) — first major compilation release. Title track became a fan anthem.

S.Sh.R. / Srednia Shkola Repa (30 April 2018) — debut studio album.

Zembondzhu (October 2021) — second studio album, 7 tracks. Genre shift towards funk, disco and pop. Themes of intimacy, insecurity and mental health. Retuziky feat. Latexfauna — album highlight, one of the finest moments in the whole discography. Paranoiia — video styled as "Rambo but with table tennis." Recorded in parallel with the brothers' and Yevhen's filming of the movie Luxembourg, Luxembourg by director Antonio Lukych.

The Best (2023) — vinyl greatest hits compilation, released alongside a vinyl reissue of Zembondzhu on the label Aby Sho Music (16 May 2023).

Pole Kanifoli / Rosin Field (21 February 2025) — third studio album, the first release since the start of the full-scale invasion. Reflection on the present moment, irony and sarcasm, sometimes philosophical. Arrangements by Serhiy "Syr" Soroka, brass instruments featured. Tykha Revoliutsiia feat. Dasha Astafieva. Orkestr Abiziyan — album hit. Kholodna Hora feat. Zhadan i Sobaky. Hlek-introvert — a phrase that immediately became a popular reference.

Key standalone hits across different years: Love (Love), Vchytelka feat. Dasha Astafieva, Habeli, Degan, Enerjiia feat. Tapolsky & Vovking, Chervonym Buzkom, Chornodenia, Khakha feat. Palindrom.

Film: Luxembourg, Luxembourg

2021 — alongside recording Zembondzhu, all three group members appeared in the film Luxembourg, Luxembourg by director Antonio Lukych (My Thoughts Are Silent). Amil and Ramil played the lead roles — brothers with diametrically opposite characters. The film was meant to come out earlier but the 2022 invasion delayed its release.

The film was a significant moment for the Nasirov brothers as independent creative individuals — they play opposites despite the ongoing joke that they are actually one person. After the film Amil successfully moved into stand-up comedy, while Ramil opened Barbernia Parubok (a barbershop) in Kharkiv — his longtime dream of becoming a barber realised.

Full-scale war: Kraken, volunteering and the return

After 24 February 2022 each member chose their own path. Yevhen Volodchenko joined a volunteer battalion and then the Kraken unit — and took part in fighting in Kharkiv region. Amil and Ramil focused on volunteering and fundraising for the military.

All three members received the Order of Merit III degree for their active support of Ukraine's defence forces.

Yevhen channelled his front-line experience into new singles — Chervonym Buzkom, Chornodenia, Khakha feat. Palindrom. After demobilisation he is returning to creative work: solo concerts, group performances and readings of his own poetry.

The group has raised more than 20 million hryvnias for the Armed Forces of Ukraine through charity concerts.

Concerts and stage

2021 — major tour of Ukraine with Zembondzhu, covering roughly half of Ukraine's regional centres. A continuation was planned for spring 2022 — 24 February stopped everything.

Kurgan & Agregat concerts are a mix of hip-hop, humour and genuine interaction with the room. Their power is in language. Surzhyk in their lyrics is not a curiosity — it is an artistic stance. "The quantum computer broke down trying to study surzhyk" — one of their own lines that summarises everything perfectly.

International shows: Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Italy and other European countries — for the diaspora and beyond.
